I didn't realize until I got to Boulder that there is segment of the population that hates our town and everyone in it. My first encounter with Boulder-hatred was on an airplane - where I was captive next to a confirmed Boulder-hater for three hours. In fact, I ended up holding her eight-week-old son when she went to the ladies' room and then got confined to the jump seat for the rest of the flight. Pretty funny - I held the lady's infant for two hours, but had to get an earful of her Boulder opinions for the rest of the flight.
"People in Boulder would drive past an abortion clinic to save a prairie dog," she said. I'm not sure what that meant. My husband and I have run into a few of these folks. One was a photographer who came to our house to shoot photos, and then told us that although he was low on gas, he'd drive to Louisville to buy it: "I wouldn't spend a dime in Boulder."Okay, dude, thanks for your opinion. Did you somehow confuse me for someone who cares what you think?
Why do people hate Boulder? They say it's full of hippies. Or they say it's full of yuppies. Both hippie-haters and yuppie-haters will find something to hate in Boulder.
People who don't want to be seen as lefty-haters say they hate us because Boulder is not diverse. One guy, in my view a total nutcase, writes in various publications here that Boulder hates gays. He hates Boulder and Boulder hates gays. As Dr. Evil would say: Rrrrrrrright. Yes, we're a regular hotbed of gay-haters here. Or so this guy says. I think it's just one more excuse for the guy, because he already hates Boulder.
TEN REASONS TO HATE BOULDER
1) Because some guy says Boulderites hate gays.
2) Because of the hippies.
3) Because of the yuppies.
4) Because of all the dogs.
5) Because of CU.
6) Because Boulder people like prairie dogs.
7) Because Boulder built a moat around the town (a/k/a Open Space).
8) Because of the lefties.
9) Because Boulder dog people call dog owners "dog guardians."
10) Because we are jealous of people who live in Boulder.

Haters are everywhere. You should hear the people I've run into who hate Albuquerque. If you hate where you live then please move and quit bringing me down.
Hi Liz
I too am a Boulder-hater. Having grown up in Denver, and then attending Colorado State, I have an inherent dislike of Boulder and everything CU as well in my blood. Somewhat ironically, I now live in Portland, Oregon, which is very much like Boulder, in fact I describe it as an overgrown Boulder to people.
Much of this is sarcasm of course, but let me offer you some more home-grown suggestions of why people hate Boulder:
1. We used to call it "The People's Republic of Boulder" because of its many Socialistic traits.
2. All those damn "trustafarians"- you know, the 20-somethings that move there from (mainly the East Coast) with all the perks that a trust fund offers, and then they dress and act like deprived hippies.
3. Panhandlers. You just couldn't avoid them, anywhere, and they were totally aggressive. Worst part was that the majority of them were very young, able bodied people that adopted the 'bum' lifestyle because they think that is part and parcel of the Boulder lifestyle.
4. CU. Need I say more. You're either with them, or you totally hate the Buffs. And I hate the Buffs!
Truthfully though, Boulder is a great town. Too bad it has pretty much merged with Denver with all the malls and crap housing in between.
Hey Liz,
I'm currently living in Santa Monica, CA, and plan to move to Boulder for grad school.
I visited the town and the school this past weekend, and Boulder seemed like an amazing place - beautiful, friendly and quiet. Certainly a great place to attend graduate school.
But, I did get a bit of this whole Boulder-hating thing. I think a lot of it comes down to where people come from. I grew up in NY, and lived in LA for the past few years. To me, Boulder has no crowds, is laid-back, and everyone was super nice.
It's sort of bizarre - I guess people are just haters!
